Story Of Bhaidooj

Bhaidooj, also known as Bhai Dooj or Bhau Beej, is the festival that celebrates the unbreakable bond between brothers and sisters. While the rituals are joyful and full of love, the festival is rooted in a fascinating ancient legend of Yama, the god of death, and his sister Yamuna, the river goddess.

The Reunion of Yama and Yamuna

According to the legend, Yama once decided to visit his sister Yamuna after a long time. Overjoyed at seeing her brother, Yamuna welcomed him with great warmth. She performed a tilak ceremony, carefully placing a mark on his forehead, prayed for his well-being, and prepared a delicious feast in his honor.

Yama’s Blessing

Yama, deeply moved by his sister’s devotion and love, was filled with joy. In his divine grace, he blessed her and declared:

“Brothers who are invited by their sisters and receive tilak on this day will live long and prosper.”

This blessing became the foundation of the Bhaidooj festival. From that day onwards, sisters across India have continued this tradition. Praying for their brothers’ long life and happiness.  While brothers, in return, promise to protect and care for their sisters.
